SPRINGFIELD PARK

[1900 Map]
Springfield Park had been used in the latter years of the 19th century for a variety of sports, having a concrete bicycle track and a half-mile running track. Horse-trotting was very popular. It was also used for rugby and by the local police for their athletics meetings. The first professional football match was played on 1 September 1897 when Wigan County played Burton Swifts in a friendly.

Latterly the ground has fallen into disrepair - and the move to the new stadium is eagerly awaited. Here are a few photos I have recently taken around the ground. The photos may be used for private purposes only, with suitable acknowledgement please.

JJB STADIUM

Work has now started on the JJB Stadium at Robin Park, and it will hopefully be finished for the start of the 1999/2000 season, when Latics are in the First Division.

The stadium will have a 25,000 all-seater capacity, and be shared with Wigan Warriors egg-chasers. Within the complex will be a Supporters Club, Conference suite, Beer-Keller, and various other goodies.
